Aymeric Luc

Aymeric Luc finished the 2020-21 season as Bayonne’s leading try-scorer with ten. The season is remembered for something else: he missed one of the kicks in the shoot-out against Biarritz that decided the promotion play-off.

Full-back or wing, 1.80m and 80kg, and 28 years old.

Born in Bayonne, he learned the game at Boucau Tarnos and then at the club he would play for, as a scrum-half. He moved to full-back in 2017 because the queue at nine was too long. He also took a business degree at Kedge and then a five-year diploma at Grenoble École de Management, done remotely across four years while playing.

He won the second division with Bayonne in 2019 and played every one of Toulon’s thirty-one matches in his first season there, reaching a Challenge Cup final in 2022. Melvyn Jaminet’s arrival in 2023 closed the position and he went seven months without playing.

Pau, a club he had nearly joined three years earlier, took him in 2024 to replace Samuel Ezeala. He came back on 14 September against Bayonne, seven months after his previous match, and scored twice.

France called him up in October 2021 when Virimi Vakatawa withdrew and took him to Japan the following summer without capping him. Ten years in the Top 14 and Pro D2, a divisional title, and no Test appearance.

The business degrees are worth noting rather than filing as a curiosity. Taking a five-year qualification remotely across four seasons of professional rugby is a considerable undertaking, and it is the reason a 28-year-old moving to his fourth club has options that most players in his position do not.
