About Ben Earl
Ben Earl produces numbers that do not look real for a back-rower and has built an England career on them.
Carries, metres after contact, tackles, turnovers — he sits at or near the top of the Premiership lists in most of them, most seasons. The unusual part is where the metres come from: he is quick enough to be a genuine wide-channel threat, which is why England have used him at eight rather than seven despite not being the biggest option.
The trade-off is the set piece. He is not a lineout option and a pack built around him has to find that elsewhere.
He has been used as an impact replacement and as a starter, and the workrate does not fall off in either role.
England’s back row has been the most heavily rotated area of the squad for years. He has been the closest thing to a constant, which given the competition is the strongest thing that can be said about him.
