About Gabriel N’Gandebe

Born in Douala, raised in La Courneuve, and introduced to rugby by a school sports association. He is a French champion.

Gabriel N’Gandebe was born in Douala, came to France at nine, grew up in La Courneuve and found rugby through his school sports association. None of those are the usual coordinates for a French champion. He is one anyway.

Wing at Montpellier, 1.73m and 75kg, and 29 years old. There is no lighter man in the squad.

Bobigny took him first, then Massy, and he played up an age group throughout. Sevens gave him his first France shirt, with the development side, and the under-20s picked him for the 2016 Six Nations. His senior debut came in the third tier with Massy against Tyrosse in April of that year.

The club signed him in June 2017 on three years and he has never left. His Top 14 debut came that September against Oyonnax, and his first start in November, against Stade Toulousain, in which he scored inside half an hour.

Fabien Galthié called him into a France squad in 2020, in the first weeks of the new coaching regime, though no cap followed.

What he does have is the medals. European silverware came in 2021, then the championship on 24 June 2022, when he came off the bench for Jan Serfontein in both the semi-final and the final. Twenty-three matches and three tries that season. A second Challenge Cup arrived in 2026, and a second losing final in the same year, eight seasons after the first.

A small, quick winger in a league that has moved steadily away from them. Nine seasons at one club in the professional era is its own kind of achievement.
