Gauthier Doubrere

Bordeaux-Bègles extended Gauthier Doubrère by two seasons in January 2017 and then released him from the last year of it. He signed for Biarritz in the second division and took four years to get back.

Scrum-half at Castres, 1.76m and 82kg, born at Armous-et-Cau in the Gers on 24 December 1995.

He began at the Vic/Bassoues club and joined Auch as a cadet, playing in the Crabos final in 2014 and making his Fédérale 1 debut for the first team that September. Sud Ouest named him the Gers sportsman of the year.

Bordeaux gave him an academy contract in 2015 and a Top 14 debut against Stade Français in April 2016. He won the espoirs championship with them that year, and was released two years later.

Biarritz went up while he was there. He moved to Mont-de-Marsan in 2021, and Castres, then the beaten French finalists, signed him in 2022. The manager who took him, Pierre-Henry Broncan, is from the Gers as well.

France capped him at Under-18 and then Under-20 level, where he played two matches of the 2015 Six Nations and five at that year’s Junior World Cup, two of them as a starter. That was the peak of his representative career and it came before he had played twenty senior matches.

He is the understudy to Jérémy Fernandez, who is a one-club man three months his junior and holds the shirt. Being the second nine at a settled club is a specific job, and Doubrère has now done it for four seasons at a level that released him once already.
