Juan Martín González

Juan Martín González is the most complete young forward Argentina have produced in years, and the least loud about it.

He plays across the back row and offers something in each role: enough height to be a genuine lineout option at the tail, enough pace to be effective in the wide channels, and enough size to carry when the plan requires it.

The tackle count is high and, more usefully, the tackle quality is consistent — he puts ball-carriers backwards rather than merely stopping them, which is what allows a defence to compete for the turnover afterwards.

He moved to English rugby early in his Test career, which has accelerated the physical side of his development considerably.

Argentina’s back row has been dominated for a decade by players in their thirties. He is the clearest evidence that the transition will not be as painful as it looked.
