About Louis Rees-Zammit
Louis Rees-Zammit left rugby for the NFL in the middle of a Six Nations, which is not a thing that happens, and then came back.
The speed was always the asset. He is genuinely quick by any sport’s standard — the reason an NFL practice squad was interested at all — and in rugby terms it made him a finisher who only needed the ball in a straight line with a metre of grass.
The gridiron detour cost him the better part of two seasons at the age when a wing should be accumulating Test caps, and Wales, who could scarcely afford to lose him, moved on without much choice.
The return has been to the Premiership rather than straight back into certainty, and the honest position is that he is rebuilding a rugby career rather than resuming one.
Wales need what he has more than most teams would. Whether the timing works is the most interesting individual question in the Welsh squad.
