The ball-carrying is genuinely destructive — short, flat, and difficult to stop without committing two defenders, which is exactly the currency England’s attack trades in around the fringes.
The throwing has been the long-running debate. At his best it is fine; under the most extreme pressure it has occasionally wobbled, and in a Test match that is the difference between a maul try and a scrum against.
Injuries have taken more from his career than form ever has. Neck and knee problems have cost him entire seasons at the point where a hooker should be accumulating caps.
He remains, when fit, the most physically disruptive hooker available to England. The condition attached to that sentence is the whole story of the last five years.
