Romain Macurdy

Romain Macurdy is the son of the professional rugby player Michel Macurdy and the journalist Hélène Macurdy. He made his Top 14 debut at nineteen, in Paris against Stade Français on 15 May 2021.

Note on his current club: Macurdy is still listed in Castres‘s squad data. He joined US Montauban in 2026, after their relegation to Pro D2.

Back-row forward, 2.01m and 109kg, born in Bordeaux on 21 September 2001.

He came entirely through the Montpellier academy, where he won a national under-14 title in 2015, and stayed there until Castres signed him in 2023 on a three-year contract. He did not see out the third year of it.

The published record holds little else. There is no account of his appearance totals or his role at either club, and inventing one is not an option.

The measurements are worth something on their own. At 2.01m he is the second-tallest player at Castres, and a back-rower of that height is a lineout forward first: a side that loses a second row mid-match can move him without reorganising the set piece. It is a specific and valuable thing to be, and it is also the kind of profile that gets a player squad minutes rather than a shirt.

Dropping to Pro D2 at 24 with a newly relegated club is a decision that reads two ways. It is a step down in level and, for a player who has spent five seasons on the fringe of two Top 14 squads, it is the first realistic offer of regular rugby.
