Romain Ntamack is the coolest head in French rugby — the Toulouse fly-half born into the sport’s aristocracy who turned inherited fame into his own catalogue: World Cup-winning drop-goal composure at age-grade level, Champions Cup and Top 14 titles in bunches, and the try against New Zealand from behind his own posts that remains one of the great individual moments of the modern Test era. And most of France would still pick him first.

Son of Émile Ntamack, he plays with the anti-flash gene rare in gifted tens: flat, brave distribution, a defensive read most fly-halves cannot offer — he tackles like a centre and France defend him in the front line without hiding him — and game management that treats scoreboard and clock as the real opposition. Alongside Antoine Dupont at Toulouse he forms the most decorated club half-back pairing of the age; the two have been reading each other since their teens.
