About Tomás Albornoz
Tomás Albornoz is the fly-half Argentina had been waiting for without quite admitting it.
He took over the ten shirt at a point when the position had been an open question for several seasons, and settled it quickly by doing the ordinary things reliably: kicking his goals, controlling territory, and giving the ball to his outside backs in a state they could use.
The kicking out of hand is the strongest part of the game. Argentina play a territorial style and it only functions with a ten who can find grass under pressure.
He is not a high-risk playmaker and has not tried to be, which given the alternative Argentina spent years experimenting with is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation.
He plays his club rugby in Italy, in a league that has improved sharply. For the Pumas, he has turned the most unstable position in the side into the most predictable.
