Ethan Dumortier

Ethan Dumortier won the Under-20 World Championship with France in 2019 while two years younger than the age group allowed for. He played the first three matches. France beat Australia 24-23 in the final.

Wing at Lyon, 1.91m and 93kg, born in the city on 29 December 2000 but raised in the Isère, at Siccieu-Saint-Julien-et-Carisieu.

He started at Saint-Savin in 2009, moved to CS Bourgoin-Jallieu in 2014, and Lyon found him three years later and took him into the Crabos. He was a centre and they moved him to the wing.

France Under-20s picked him in January 2019 and he scored against Italy in his only match of that Six Nations. He went back for the 2020 tournament and scored in both matches he played, against Italy and England, before the pandemic ended it.

His first professional appearance came on 14 December 2019, against Benetton in the European Cup. He was eighteen, started on the wing and lasted seventy minutes before Noa Nakaitaci replaced him. He played three matches that season, all in Europe, made his France sevens debut in February, and was studying for a sports science degree throughout.

The following year brought seven Top 14 matches and a first try, against Agen. In 2021-22 he scored twice against Clermont on the opening weekend and Fabien Galthié started watching him. Lyon won the Challenge Cup that season, beating Toulon 30-12 at the Vélodrome, though Dumortier did not play in the final.

The senior cap came in the 2023 Six Nations. He has six caps and two tries, and was named in the Top 14 team of the season that year. He has played twenty-one times for France at sevens, scoring five tries.

A big, fast wing fast-tracked at every level who then stalled slightly at the top one. Six caps at 25 is a career that could still go either way.
