Fin Smith

Fin Smith has gone from promising Northampton fly-half to the man many consider England’s long-term ten in barely two seasons. He ran the attack in Saints’ 2023-24 Premiership title run while still early in his twenties, took his England chance when it came, and has since turned the national fly-half debate — for years a Marcus Smith referendum — into a genuine two-horse race between players with opposite instincts.

Where his rival plays what he sees, Fin Smith plays what the scoreboard needs. His game is built on tempo control: he takes the ball flatter than most young tens, fixes defenders before releasing, and kicks with a maturity that belies his age — long spirals for territory, contestable kicks placed for chasers rather than hope. He comes from good rugby stock — his grandfather Tom Elliot was a Scotland international — and Scotland pursued him hard through age-grade rugby before he committed to England, a tug-of-war that still colours how both fanbases discuss him. England’s difficult 2026 Six Nations complicated everyone’s stock, but the fly-half position is the one area where the future looks settled rather than uncertain: whichever Smith starts, England’s attack now has an organising brain at ten.
