Freeman had a year left. He signed anyway. Here is what the champions actually protected, and the one number the club left out.
Seventy-nine tries in 118 games. That is the number Northampton Saints put in their own announcement on Wednesday, and it is the reason the announcement exists.
The Tommy Freeman contract extension keeps the 25-year-old at Franklin’s Gardens “for the foreseeable future”, in the club’s words. He had a season left on the old deal. The new one has no published end date, which is unusual for a club that put the year on Henry Pollock’s contract at £400k, £133k below the marquee rate and for a player Phil Dowson calls “undoubtedly one of the best back-three players in the world”.
Freeman’s own line was about people, not money.
“A big part of my decision was the people here. The squad is so close, and that extends beyond the players to partners, families and everyone around the Club. That tight-knit feel creates a special culture that helps drive what we do on the pitch.”
Loyalty stories are the easy version. The useful question is what Northampton would have lost, and the answer has three parts. Is Freeman the most important player at the champions? Say so in the comments, then read on.

The third row is the one that matters most and gets mentioned least. A Premiership squad carries two specialist 13s and prays. Northampton carry two and a winger who has done the job for England. When Dingwall is away with Steve Borthwick and Hutchinson with Scotland, which is every Test window, Freeman is the midfield insurance that lets Dowson pick a full-strength back three and still have a 13.

The aerial game is the bit you can watch for
Freeman is not the biggest wing in the league. What he has is the second jump. Watch him under a contestable kick: he does not go up with the chaser, he lets the chaser commit, then goes up late and takes the ball at the top of the second man’s reach. It is a full-back’s habit learned in a winger’s shirt, and it is the reason he is picked to chase England’s contestable kicks rather than only to finish.
Dowson put it as a list, and every item on it is a technical claim rather than a compliment.
“He has all the physical attributes you could want, but it’s his rugby intelligence, skillset and confidence that really set him apart. Whether it’s his footwork, aerial ability, kicking game or instinct for a big moment, Tommy consistently finds ways to make an impact and has all the qualities of a genuine gamechanger.”
Northampton without Freeman would still finish tries. They would lose the one back who wins the ball back in the air on his own exit, which in a Champions Cup knockout is the difference between defending your 22 and attacking theirs.
Why the end date matters, and why Saints did not give one
The club said “foreseeable future”. Planet Rugby’s report confirmed no length was disclosed. That is Northampton’s choice and it is not nothing.
A player with a year left who extends early has done one of two things: signed long, or signed a bridge with a release. Freeman was on the 2025 Lions tour with Pollock, Fin Smith and Alex Mitchell, and the site has already set out why neither of Pollock’s possible exits is Northampton’s call. Dowson’s phrase about Freeman committing “so early in this season’s recruitment and retention cycle” reads like a club that wanted the headline before the market opened.
None of that is an accusation. It is a gap in the announcement, and a reader deciding what the news means is entitled to know it is there. Two PREM titles in three seasons were built on keeping this group together. The length of the Freeman deal is the first real test of whether that continues past the World Cup.
The case for calling it a loyalty story
It is one. Freeman was released by Leicester as a teenager, came through Moulton College and the Saints academy, made his debut at 19 and has scored in two finals. He became the first Englishman to score in every round of a Six Nations in 2025. A player like that re-signing with a year to run, at 25, in a market where Newcastle can offer £1m a year to a back-rower, is a story about a club that people want to play for.
Freeman said so himself: “Saints is a special place.” Dowson said players “of his calibre are in demand across the game”. Both are true. The tactical argument above is simply why the demand exists.
What to watch on Friday week
Northampton open the Gallagher PREM at home to Newcastle Red Bulls on Friday 25 September. Freeman is in the 30-player group for this Friday’s warm-up against Black Lion, with the internationals returning, and the starting side is due on Thursday.
Watch where Dowson puts him. If it is the wing, the club is telling you the back three is settled and the 13 cover is a Test-window plan. If it is 13, the club has just re-signed its outside centre and called him a winger.
