Henry Pollock

Henry Pollock is the player English rugby cannot stop arguing about, and the search numbers say the public has picked a side. A back-row forward with Northampton Saints, he went from age-grade rugby to a British & Irish Lions tour in the space of about eighteen months, scoring tries in the Champions Cup, winning the World Rugby U20 Championship with England in 2024 and collecting a senior England call before most players his age have a full Premiership season behind them.

What separates Pollock is not size — by Test back-row standards he is light — but the speed with which he reads broken play. He supports like an extra centre, hits rucks selectively rather than religiously, and celebrates like a man who knows the cameras are on him. That last part is why he divides opinion: to some fans he is box office, to others he is noise. Either way, opposition supporters buy tickets partly to see him lose, which is its own kind of stardom.

The 2026 season is the one that decides what he becomes. England’s fifth-place Six Nations finish put every young English forward under a microscope, and the openside question remains the most contested selection in Steve Borthwick’s squad. Pollock’s case is that England’s best moments in the past two seasons have come when the game got loose, and nobody in the country plays loose rugby better.
