Jiuta Wainiqolo plays rugby as though the fifteen-a-side laws are a suggestion, and it works more often than it has any right to.

An Olympic gold medallist with Fiji’s sevens side, he brought the whole sevens toolkit into the fifteens game: the step at full pace, the offload out of a tackle that should have ended the phase, the willingness to run from anywhere.

The finishing is genuinely elite. Given a metre he takes it, and he scores tries from positions that do not look like scoring positions until he is past the last defender.

The defensive edge and the aerial contest are where opposition analysts start, and they are legitimate targets.

He plays in France, which has both sharpened his structure and, sensibly, declined to coach the improvisation out of him. For Fiji he is the reason a match is never quite over.
