Léo Berdeu

Léo Berdeu finished 2022 as the leading scorer in the Top 14, with 251 points, and in the Challenge Cup, with 71. Lyon won the Challenge Cup that year. He has never been capped by France.

He is a fly-half, 1.95m and 99kg, born in Cannes on 13 June 1998, and the tallest back in the squad by four centimetres.

His father Éric played full-back and wing for Tarbes, losing the 1988 championship final, and later for Nice and for Grasse, where he became club president while his son was playing there.

Léo started at Grasse and joined the Toulon academy, winning the Crabos title in 2016 with a 31-14 win over Bordeaux-Bègles. Lyon recruited him that year, after three seasons in the Var, and he played his first Top 14 match in May 2017 against Grenoble.

Agen took him on loan for 2018-19. He started from the first week, kept the shirt, and the loan was extended a second year. The Midi Olympique ranked him the ninth-best fly-half in the division that season. He came back to Lyon for 2020-21.

He was in France Under-20 squads repeatedly, in the generation that became junior world champions for the first time, and never got beyond the development side. Louis Carbonel, Matthieu Jalibert and Romain Ntamack were the same age. He played for the France universities team that beat England in 2018, and in July 2024 he wore the shirt against Uruguay in an uncapped development match.

He was the Challenge Cup’s leading scorer again in 2025, with 66 points, as Lyon lost the final.

Two golden boots in one season and no caps is what happens when your career overlaps exactly with three fly-halves who between them have more than 150. It is not a verdict on the player.
