About Malcolm Marx
For a period around 2017 and 2018, Malcolm Marx was producing turnover numbers that back-row forwards would have been happy with — from hooker.
That is still the thing that separates him. Marx is a specialist jackal in a front-row body, and the effect on a Springboks defensive set is structural rather than incidental: a side can commit fewer bodies to the breakdown because the hooker is already a threat there. Very few hookers in the professional era have changed how their team defends.
The rest of the game came with him. His lineout throwing has been consistent through two World Cup cycles, and his carrying is direct in the way South Africa want from their front row — short, hard, over the gainline rather than around it.
He came through the Lions, where he was part of the side that reached three consecutive Super Rugby finals, then moved to Japan with Kubota Spears, from where he has continued to be selected without interruption.
A serious knee injury ruled him out of the 2023 Rugby World Cup after the pool stage. South Africa won it anyway, which says something about their depth and nothing at all about his standing.
He remains the benchmark other Test hookers are measured against, and the competition behind him in South Africa is the strongest it has ever been.
