Mateo Carreras

Mateo Carreras scored three tries in one match at the 2023 World Cup, all of them against Japan. It was his only try-scoring game of the tournament and it was enough to make him Argentina’s first-choice wing.

He plays wing or full-back for Bayonne, is 1.73m and 84kg, and is no relation to Santiago Carreras despite the shared surname and nationality.

He started at Los Tarcos in San Miguel de Tucumán at four years old, won age-group national titles there and an Argentine championship with the Tucumán province Under-18s. He played senior rugby for Los Tarcos at eighteen, in the Torneo del Noroeste and then the Nacional de Clubes.

The Jaguares signed him on four years in 2019. He won the Currie Cup First Division with their reserve side, was in the Super Rugby squad for 2020, and then got injured in a warm-up match and lost both that season and the Súperliga Americana campaign he was training for.

Newcastle Falcons took him mid-season in December 2020 and kept extending him. He made the Premiership team of the season in 2023.

The move was announced in November 2023 for the following two seasons, then brought him in early, in February 2024, as a medical joker for Luke Morahan. In October 2025 they extended him three more years, to 2029.

His route to a cap went through sevens: the 2018 Sevens World Cup, four World Series rounds, and a South American title in 2020 where he was named player of the tournament. Argentina capped him in fifteens against Australia in Townsville on 25 September 2021.

Thirty-three caps, thirty of them starts.

Small, quick and a genuine finisher who works back well enough that Bayonne trust him at 15. The 2029 contract says what the club thinks of him.
