About Max Spring
Eleven league tries and a first hat-trick in 2025-26, and one of two men who now captain the side.
Max Spring scored eleven league tries in 2025-26, including the first hat-trick of his professional career, against Bordeaux in the second round. In the same season he became one of his club’s two regular captains, alongside Romain Taofifénua.
Full-back at Racing 92, 1.73m and 75kg, and 25 years old.
His mother is Basque and his father Sean is a New Zealand Maori, a centre from Wellington who came to play for US Garazi in the 1990s and worked as an interpreter while he did it. Max grew up in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, started at the club that succeeded his father’s and where his father now coaches, and played Basque pelota seriously alongside it. His younger brothers Tom and Sam are professionals too, at Bayonne and Biarritz.
Bayonne took him at fifteen and Racing in the spring of 2019. His first appearance for them came in the 2020 Supersevens, which they won at their own ground with him scoring in the final, and his league debut that October, starting at full-back against Stade Toulousain in the week the club was preparing a European Cup final.
France capped him at 21, starting the second Test against Japan in July 2022, the day after he had scored against England for the Barbarians. He has two caps and was named in a 39-man group for the Nations Championship in June 2026.
He can play anywhere from nine to fifteen and kicks goals. What he is best known for is footwork, and he has become the Top 14 full-back most likely to beat the first man.
