About Maxime Gouzou
Biarritz did not keep Maxime Gouzou at the end of 2017-18. He was a nineteen-year-old second row in their Crabos side and they let him go.
He is a No. 8 at Lyon, 1.89m and 106kg, born in Bayonne on 11 September 1998.
He started at US Bardos. After Biarritz released him he joined Mont-de-Marsan in 2018 and made his professional debut on 7 February 2019 at Oyonnax. He scored in his second match, eight days later against Aurillac, and was given a two-year academy contract at the end of the season.
The next two years went almost entirely to the medical room: a concussion, then knee trouble, then a shoulder. He signed his first full professional contract with Mont-de-Marsan in 2021 having barely played.
He moved up to the Top 14 in 2022 and debuted at Brive on 3 September. On 7 January 2023, against Pau, he ruptured his cruciate ligaments. He did not play again until 29 October, against Clermont.
His first Top 14 try came against Oyonnax on 18 November 2023, and his first Champions Cup appearance against Connacht on 13 January 2024.
He was in the Lyon squad beaten in the 2025 Challenge Cup final.
A back-rower who was surplus at nineteen, rebuilt himself two divisions down, lost two more seasons to concussion and joint injuries, and then lost most of a year to a knee just as he arrived in the top flight. He is 27, and if the body holds, the good seasons are now.
