About Peato Mauvaka
Peato Mauvaka is the most destructive ball-carrying hooker in Test rugby and has spent much of his career as France’s second choice.
That is a statement about Julien Marchand rather than about him. France have carried two hookers of genuine international quality for most of the last cycle, and the split has generally been Marchand starting and Mauvaka arriving after fifty minutes to run at a tiring pack.
The carrying is the standout. He is a hooker who breaks tackles in midfield rather than only over the gainline, and his try-scoring record from close range and from the driving maul is unusually strong.
He came through Castres and moved to Toulouse, where he has won multiple Top 14 titles and Champions Cups.
He was born in New Caledonia, and his path into the French system came through the domestic academy structure rather than through the age-grade national sides.
