About Thibaut Regard
He joined the club at fifteen in 2008 and has played more than two hundred matches for it since.
Thibaut Regard signed for Lyon in 2008, aged fifteen. He has played more than two hundred official matches for the club since. He is 33.
Centre and wing, 1.80m and 95kg, born on 6 August 1993.
He started in January 2000, at six, at ASPTT Bron-Saint Priest, and moved to EMS Bron XV in 2002. Both clubs are in the Lyon suburbs. He has never played senior rugby for anyone else.
He won the Crabos title with the club in 2012, and the second division championship twice, in 2014 and 2016. Those two promotions are the spine of the modern club: Lyon came up, went back down, came up again, and have stayed in the Top 14 since.
Regard was in the squad for both. He was 20 for the first and 22 for the second, and he has now spent a decade in the top flight with the side he was promoted with.
Two hundred appearances for one club is rare anywhere and close to extinct in French rugby, where squads turn over every summer and a player who stays five years is a veteran. It usually means one of two things: either the player was never quite good enough to be bought, or he never wanted to leave. In Regard’s case the honours list is short and the appearance list is very long, which points fairly clearly at the second.
A dependable, physical midfielder at 95kg who has outlasted three generations of teammates at the club that raised him.
