Bautista Delguy

Bautista Delguy’s first start in Super Rugby was against the Lions in February 2018. He scored twice. By the end of that season he had ten tries in fifteen games and a contract extension to 2021.

Then his knee went four matches into 2019 and the season ended in April.

Delguy plays wing or full-back for Clermont, stands 1.83m and weighs 84kg, which is light for the Top 14 and tells you he is picked for what he does with space rather than what he does in contact.

He is from Remedios de Escalada, in greater Buenos Aires, and started at Pucará in the URBA club competition in 2016. Argentina moved him through everything at once: the Under-20s at the 2016 and 2017 junior world championships, the Argentina XV in the Americas Rugby Championship, and six World Sevens Series tournaments between 2016 and 2017.

The Jaguares took him in 2018 and he reached a Super Rugby final with them in 2019, though the knee meant he watched it.

France came next, and in stages. Bordeaux-Bègles signed him in December 2020 as an additional player to the end of that season. Perpignan gave him two years in June 2021, just after they had gone up. He left after one, and Clermont gave him three.

His first Argentina cap came against Wales in San Juan on 9 June 2018. He went to the 2019 World Cup and played three matches, against Tonga, England and the United States. He now has 37 caps, 33 of them starts, and ten international tries, across six Rugby Championship campaigns.

He is a genuine finisher who has never quite had an uninterrupted run at a season. With Alivereti Raka on the other wing, Clermont have two men whose entire value is what happens in the last fifteen metres.
