About Pieter-Steph du Toit
Pieter-Steph du Toit has been World Rugby Player of the Year and, in the 2023 World Cup final, made 28 tackles in a Test South Africa won by a single point.
That final is the shortest way to explain him. He is a 200cm forward who has played lock and blindside at the highest level, and whose defining quality is not size or lineout work but volume — a tackle count that stays high in the eightieth minute of a knockout match.
He won the world player award in 2019, at the end of a season in which South Africa took the Rugby Championship and the World Cup. He was named man of the match in the 2023 final. Those two seasons bookend a career that has run almost exactly alongside the Springboks’ return to the top of the game.
He came through Western Province and the Stormers, moved to the Sharks, then to Toyota Verblitz in Japan.
