Santiago Carreras

Santiago Carreras is the most interesting positional experiment in Argentine rugby, and it has largely worked.

He arrived in Test rugby as a full-back — a counter-attacker with a long boot and the footwork of a back-three player — and Argentina then asked him to play fly-half, which is not a conversion anyone attempts lightly at international level.

The results have been uneven and instructive. His running threat from ten is genuine in a way most specialist fly-halves cannot offer, and Argentina attack wider and later with him controlling it. The game management has taken longer to arrive, which is exactly what you would expect.

He still covers fifteen, and Argentina have used the flexibility to change shape mid-match rather than mid-selection.

A move to the Premiership gives him consistent rugby in the position he is still learning. The upside, if the control catches up with the instinct, is considerable.
