Rugby Australia’s team announcement for Saturday’s Test in San Salvador de Jujuy leaves the captain out of the matchday 23 altogether. It also hands a first start since 2024 to a prop whose last visit to Argentina lasted 18 minutes.

Not benched. Rotated out of the matchday 23 completely, for a Test in the one country where Australia’s last visit produced a scoreline nobody in the camp says out loud.
The Wallabies team to play Argentina at Estadio 23 de Agosto on Saturday 29 August is captained by tighthead Allan Alaalatoa for the seventh time, with Melbourne-raised loosehead Isaac Kailea starting his first Test since 2024. Wallabies head coach Les Kiss calls it managing a long season. It is also the exact question this tour was always going to ask of Australia.

The prop whose last Argentina Test lasted 18 minutes
Kailea’s return has a symmetry to it that the release does not mention.
The last time he played a Test on Argentinian soil he was gone before the first water break. 18 minutes into the 20-19 win in La Plata on 31 August 2024, a head knock took him off. Rugby Australia confirmed at the time that he was symptom-free but still faced an 11-day stand-down, so he flew home while the squad stayed for the rematch.
He has not started a Test for Australia since. Now he packs down at loosehead alongside hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Alaalatoa, in the same country, on a ground 1,200 metres above sea level.
That is not sentiment. It is a coach with a home World Cup 14 months away, checking whether a 26-year-old prop can hold a Test scrum when the altitude and the crowd are both against him.

What Kiss said, and what he left out
The reasoning was delivered flat, the way it usually is when a coach knows the follow-up question is coming.
“As coaches we’ve needed to consider how we manage a long season for players while also providing Test experience in important positions.”
Kiss added that the side still carries “lots of experience and proven combinations for what’s going to be another tough challenge taking on Argentina on their home turf”.
Both sentences are true. Neither explains why the captain is not among the eight replacements, which is where a coach normally parks a rested leader who might still be needed at 60 minutes.
Continuity everywhere except the back row
Look past Wilson and this is the most settled Australian side of the year.
Josh Canham and Jeremy Williams restart their second-row partnership. Tom Hooper comes in at blindside with Fraser McReight on the openside and two-time John Eales Medallist Rob Valetini shifting to No.8. Ryan Lonergan and Carter Gordon start together for a second straight Test, off the back of the more direct game Kiss asked Gordon to run against Japan.
Hunter Paisami and Isaac Henry keep the midfield after Townsville. Harry Potter, Max Jorgensen and Tom Wright form an unchanged back three for a fourth consecutive Test, the longest run of stability Australia have had in that unit under Kiss.
So the rotation is not scattergun. It is one position, and it happens to be the captain’s.
The number underneath the decision
Here is the context the announcement does not carry.
The last Test the Wallabies played in Argentina finished Argentina 67, Australia 27, in Santa Fe on 7 September 2024. Both 2025 meetings were staged in Australia. So 67-27 remains, on the record, the most recent evidence of what this fixture looks like when it is played over there.
Argentina also won the most recent meeting between the sides, 28-26 in Sydney last September, with fly-half Santiago Carreras kicking 23 points. Felipe Contepomi’s squad for this window carries ten uncapped players, which cuts both ways. Thinner in Test minutes. Harder to prepare for.
Rest your captain into that and the rotation stops being administrative. It becomes a statement about what this tour is for.
There is no Rugby Championship to lose this year
This is the part most previews will skip.
There is no Rugby Championship in 2026. SANZAAR’s tournament has moved to a biennial cycle, and this year’s slot belongs to Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, the four-Test All Blacks tour of South Africa. That is the tour that pushed the Rugby Championship off the calendar.
Which means Jujuy carries no table, no points, no title. Australia are playing two Tests in Argentina for world ranking points and squad information, and nothing else.
That is the honest defence of leaving Wilson out. It is also the honest case against it. If the tournament pressure is gone, this was the safest possible week to give a captain 80 minutes in genuinely hostile conditions before the games that do count.
The counter-case
Rotating a captain out of a low-stakes Test is defensible right up until you lose it.
Australia lost to Ireland and France in July before beating Italy once and Japan twice. A defeat here would leave the Wallabies with two wins over Tier 1 opposition all year, heading into South Africa in Perth and two Bledisloe Tests.
Momentum is not a table. It is still real, and Kiss has spent a season building it slowly.
The argument the other way is simply arithmetic. Wilson has started almost everything. Hooper is only available for these two Tests before World Rugby’s Regulation 9 sends him back to Exeter, and Valetini needs No.8 minutes.
Take those three facts together and somebody in that back row had to sit.

Three details worth holding onto. Massimo De Lutiis, Wallaby No.1000, is the tighthead cover, and Billy Pollard made his Test debut in Argentina in 2022 before coming back here as the replacement hooker.
Brumbies pair Lachlan Shaw and Charlie Cale will play their first Tests away from home, which is precisely the “Test experience in important positions” Kiss was talking about.
Tate McDermott makes his 56th appearance in gold from the bench.
What happens next
Two Tests, then the squad breaks up. The Wallabies team to play Argentina in Mendoza on Saturday 5 September will be named at Estádio Malvinas Argentinas, after which Hooper and Len Ikitau return to their clubs.
South Africa arrive in Perth on Sunday 27 September. The Bledisloe Tests follow at Eden Park on Saturday 10 October and Accor Stadium on Saturday 17 October. Every Wallabies Test date left this year then runs through to a November tour of England, Scotland and Wales.
