About Scott Barrett
Scott Barrett has the least glamorous job in the most famous family in New Zealand rugby, and he has made the All Blacks captaincy look like the natural conclusion of it.
He is a second row in the traditional sense: lineout, cleanout, tackle, repeat. What separates him is the lineout intelligence — both as a jumper and as a caller, reading the opposition’s tendencies quickly enough to change the plan mid-match.
The physical edge has occasionally tipped over. He plays close enough to the line that cards have come at expensive moments.
The captaincy, taken on in a difficult period for the All Blacks, has visibly suited him. He is not a demonstrative leader and the side has looked steadier for it.
He is the eldest of the three brothers to hold the shirt and the one whose value is hardest to see from the highlights. New Zealand’s pack works because someone does what he does.
