About Siya Kolisi
Siya Kolisi is the most consequential rugby player of his generation, and the trophies only tell part of it: two Rugby World Cups lifted as South Africa’s first black Test captain, and a story — from Zwide township outside Gqeberha to back-to-back world titles — that reshaped who South African rugby believes it belongs to.
It is easy for the symbolism to swallow the player, which does Kolisi a disservice. He is a blindside flanker of genuine Test class: a violent first-contact tackler, an underrated lineout option, and one of the great big-game forwards — his best performances have consistently arrived in finals and deciders, when the collisions matter most. The 2019 final against England and the one-point knockouts of the 2023 tournament were Kolisi games, won in the tight five metres either side of the ruck.
Under Rassie Erasmus, who made him captain in 2018 and built the Springbok identity around him, Kolisi has become the connective tissue of the most successful Test side of the era — South Africa have lost just three times in the twenty-six matches our database records since Erasmus returned to the head-coach role in 2024. Now in his mid-thirties, every campaign is discussed as possibly his last, and the four-Test Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand gives this season the kind of stage his career has always seemed scripted for.
His foundation work on gender-based violence and childhood poverty in South Africa is as central to his public life as rugby.
