About Thomas Du Toit
Thomas du Toit is the prop who solves a selection problem, and in a squad that carries a 6-2 or 7-1 bench split, that is close to indispensable.
He can scrummage at tighthead and loosehead to Test standard. Very few players in world rugby can say it honestly, and it means a matchday twenty-three carrying him effectively covers three front-row positions with two players.
He is also large and mobile enough to be used as a carrier rather than protected as a set-piece specialist, which suits a Springboks pack that expects its props to be part of the pattern.
The trade-off has been that versatility can crowd out a settled shirt. He has spent much of his Test career as the answer to whatever the week’s problem is rather than the first name in a position.
A move to the Premiership has given him consistent starting rugby at tighthead. For South Africa, he remains the most flexible piece in the tightest area of the squad.
