About Andy Farrell

Andy Farrell is the head coach of Ireland, a dual-code international who delivered the 2023 Grand Slam, a first series win in New Zealand and a Lions series win in Australia.

Andy Farrell is the head coach of Ireland and, on results, the most successful man ever to hold the job. Born in Wigan in May 1975, he is one of the very few to have reached the top of both rugby codes.

In league he was a loose forward for Wigan Warriors, winning 34 Great Britain caps and captaining the side. He switched codes in 2005, played centre and fly-half for Saracens, and won eight union caps for England including at the 2007 World Cup — a conversion widely written off at the time that he made work.

From defence coach to head coach

Farrell coached at Saracens before joining England as an assistant in 2011 and touring with the British & Irish Lions as defence coach in 2013. He moved to Ireland as Joe Schmidt’s defence coach in 2016 and succeeded him after the 2019 World Cup, taking charge for the 2020 Six Nations.

What followed reset Irish expectations. Ireland won a first ever Test series in New Zealand in 2022, took the Grand Slam in 2023, went to number one in the world, and added the 2024 Championship. Farrell was World Rugby Coach of the Year in 2023.

The Lions and the return

He took a sabbatical in 2025 to coach the British & Irish Lions to a 2–1 series win in Australia, with Simon Easterby and Paul O’Connell holding the Ireland reins. He returned for the 2026 Six Nations, where Ireland took the Triple Crown and finished second behind France.

Style

Farrell’s Ireland are built on a highly organised multi-phase attack that lives on ruck speed, with pre-programmed strike plays off set piece and a line-speed defence carried over from his own specialism. Just as characteristic is the environment: he devolves unusual amounts of authority to senior players and has made squad culture a stated competitive advantage rather than a soft extra.

As a player A dual-code international. Loose forward for Wigan Warriors with 34 Great Britain rugby league caps, then switched codes in 2005 for Saracens and won 8 union caps for England.
