About Brendan Venter

Brendan Venter is Director of Rugby at Saracens, taking full charge on 1 July 2026. The move was an unusual one: he and Mark McCall effectively swapped roles, with McCall stepping down after fifteen seasons to become Technical Adviser and a board member.

Born in Johannesburg in December 1969, he was a centre who won 17 Springbok caps and was part of the 1995 World Cup-winning squad, coming on as a replacement in the final against New Zealand. He played for London Irish from 1998 to 2003, latterly as player-coach, and qualified as a medical doctor alongside his playing career.

The first Saracens era

Venter was Saracens’ Director of Rugby from June 2009 to January 2011, a short spell in which he rebuilt the club’s culture and playing structure and laid the foundations for everything that followed. McCall succeeded him and Venter stayed on as a part-time technical adviser for roughly fifteen years, spanning the most successful period in the club’s history.

He has also worked as technical director at the Sharks and London Irish, as Italy’s defence coach from 2017 to 2019, and as a consultant to South Africa.

Style

He is one of rugby’s sharpest defensive and systems thinkers — a rush-defence specialist and a culture-first organisational builder, known for blunt and often contrarian public commentary. Saracens’ trophies during his advisory years were won under McCall’s day-to-day leadership.
