Clark Laidlaw is the head coach of the Hurricanes and a Super Rugby Pacific champion. His side beat the Chiefs 60–5 in the 2026 final in Wellington — the biggest winning margin in the competition’s history — for the franchise’s second title and first in a decade. His contract runs to 2027.
Born in Jedburgh in July 1977, he was a sevens specialist rather than a fifteens professional, representing Scotland Sevens from 2001 to 2007 and scoring 246 points on the World Series. He is the son of Scotland and Lions scrum-half Roy Laidlaw and a cousin of former Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw.
The sevens years
After coaching roles at Taranaki, New Zealand Sevens, the Hurricanes and London Irish, he became head coach of the All Blacks Sevens in 2017 — the first foreigner to coach a New Zealand national rugby team. He won the 2018 World Cup Sevens, Commonwealth gold and the 2020 World Series.

He took over for 2024, reaching a semi-final and a qualifying final before the 2026 title. His side play a high-tempo, offload-heavy attacking game, and Josh Moorby equalled the single-season try-scoring record in the championship year.
