About Christophe Urios

Christophe Urios is the head coach of ASM Clermont Auvergne, in post since January 2023 and contracted to June 2027 with an option for a further year.

Born in Montpellier in December 1965, he was a hooker for Olonzac, Carcassonne and Castres, winning around fifteen selections for France A and B sides but never a senior cap.

Oyonnax, Castres, Bordeaux

He coached Castres’ forwards and academy, then Bourgoin-Jallieu, before making his name at Oyonnax between 2007 and 2015 — winning the 2013 Pro D2 and taking a small club into the Top 14. He was sporting director at Castres for the 2018 Top 14 title, then manager at Bordeaux Bègles from 2019, transforming them into a play-off side before an acrimonious exit.

Clermont

He arrived mid-season in January 2023 after Jono Gibbes was dismissed. The rebuild has improved the playing style but not yet the finish — Clermont came seventh in 2025–26, and Urios has said publicly that the coming season has to be the one that returns them to the top six.

Style

Famously abrasive and confrontational, he coaches through forward power, set-piece and emotional buy-in. Players either respond to him completely or not at all.
