Dwayne Peel is the head coach of the Scarlets, in charge since the 2021–22 season and now working under Director of Rugby Nigel Davies following the restructure of the region’s rugby department in 2026.
Born in Carmarthen in August 1981 and raised in Tumble, he was one of the outstanding scrum-halves of his generation — quick, accurate and a constant sniping threat around the fringes. He came through Tumble RFC and Llanelli into the Scarlets, then played for Sale Sharks from 2008 to 2013 and finished at Bristol.
He won 76 caps for Wales after debuting in 2001, was for years his country’s most-capped scrum-half until Mike Phillips passed him in 2013, and captained Wales in the opening match of the 2007 World Cup. He was part of the 2005 and 2008 Grand Slam sides and toured New Zealand with the British & Irish Lions in 2005 as the youngest man in the party, playing in all three Tests.
Coaching
Peel moved into coaching at Bristol as soon as he retired, then spent four seasons at Ulster from 2017 as attack and backs coach. He was announced as Scarlets head coach in April 2021 and took charge for the following season.
A hard recent run
His best campaign was 2024–25, when the Scarlets finished eighth in the URC and reached a play-off quarter-final at Leinster. The 2025–26 season was the worst of his tenure: fourteenth in the URC with four wins, bottom of the Welsh Shield and four defeats from four in the Champions Cup. That run prompted the appointment of Nigel Davies above him in January 2026 and a rebuilt backroom staff, with Aaron Dundon arriving as lead forwards coach.
Style
An attack-minded, ball-in-hand coach who favours high tempo, offloading and width, and who backs academy-produced Welsh players — a deliberate continuation of the traditional Scarlets identity. He has not yet won a trophy as a coach.
