About Nigel Davies

Nigel Davies is director of rugby at the Scarlets, a 29-cap Wales centre and Llanelli one-club man brought back to rebuild the region.

Nigel Davies is Director of Rugby at the Scarlets, confirmed permanently in June 2026 after five months in the role on an interim basis. He works above head coach Dwayne Peel, who leads daily coaching, match preparation and technical delivery.

Born in Trimsaran in March 1965, he was a centre and a Llanelli one-club man, making 498 appearances and scoring 115 tries. He won 29 caps for Wales.

Coaching and beyond

Davies was assistant to Wales under Gareth Jenkins and caretaker Wales head coach in 2007. He was Scarlets head coach from 2008 to 2012, then Director of Rugby at Gloucester until 2014, head coach at Ebbw Vale, and chief executive at Merthyr. Alongside rugby he spent two decades in business consultancy, organisational transformation and leadership development — which is precisely why he was brought back.

The remit

He was appointed interim Director of Rugby in January 2026 after conducting a review of the rugby department, and confirmed permanently that June. The job is structural rather than technical: alignment, squad rebuild and assembling a coaching team, at a critical moment for Welsh professional rugby.

Style

In this role he is a high-performance structuralist rather than a hands-on coach.

As a player Centre. His entire senior career was at Llanelli, where he made 498 appearances and scored 115 tries. 29 caps for Wales.
