About Codie Taylor
Codie Taylor has been New Zealand’s first-choice hooker across two World Cup cycles and has done it without ever being the headline.
The lineout is the foundation. His throwing accuracy has been consistently among the best in Test rugby, which is the single non-negotiable requirement of the position and the one that ends careers when it goes.
What separates him is what he does in open play. Taylor handles like a loose forward — genuinely comfortable in the wider channels, a reliable link in a New Zealand attack that expects its front row to be part of the pattern rather than merely to survive it.
He was part of the squad that won the 2015 World Cup, started the 2023 final, and has been a Crusaders regular through seven consecutive Super Rugby titles.
He was born in 1991, which by the standards of Test hookers puts him in the late-career phase where experience is doing more of the work than athleticism. New Zealand have not yet found a reason to move on.
He is one of the most-capped All Blacks hookers in history and one of the least discussed.
