About Franck Azéma
Franck Azéma is the head coach of Toulon, the Top 14-winning attack specialist who returned to the club in 2026 under director of rugby Pierre Mignoni.
Franck Azéma is the head coach of RC Toulon, returning to the club for the 2026–27 season on a deal reported to run to 2029. He had to release himself from a pre-agreement with Fiji to take it.
Born in Ambilly in April 1971, he was a centre for Perpignan and AS Montferrand, now Clermont, winning the European Challenge Cup with Montferrand in 1999. He was never capped by France.
Clermont and Toulon
He was co-coach at Perpignan from 2003, winning the Top 14 in 2009, then backs coach at Clermont under Vern Cotter before taking over as head coach and sporting director from 2014 to 2021. That spell brought the 2017 Top 14 title, the 2019 Challenge Cup and three European Cup finals. He managed Toulon from 2021 to 2023, winning the Challenge Cup, then took over at Perpignan until his dismissal in October 2025 after a poor start — a departure he has since described as a lasting source of anger.
The role, and the caveat
Toulon list him as head coach, and president Bernard Lemaître has said he is in charge of the field. Director of Rugby Pierre Mignoni has publicly framed it differently — that Azéma is a coach rather than a manager, running attack and the backs while Mignoni handles overall organisation and defence. Mignoni holds ultimate authority.
Style
An attack and backs specialist with a strong record of getting more from squads than their budgets suggest.
