About Gonzalo Quesada
Gonzalo Quesada is the head coach of Italy, appointed in January 2024 to succeed Kieran Crowley. Born in Buenos Aires in May 1974 to an Argentine father and French mother, he has spent almost his entire coaching life in European club rugby.
As a fly-half he won 39 caps for Argentina between 1996 and 2003 and finished as the top points scorer of the 1999 Rugby World Cup, kicking Los Pumas past Ireland in the play-off. He played for Hindu, Narbonne, Beziers, Stade Francais, Pau and Toulon.
Club success
He coached Argentina’s kickers before taking over at Stade Francais, where he won the Top 14 in 2015 and the European Challenge Cup in 2017. Spells at Biarritz and Stade Francais again followed, before the Italy job.
Italy
Quesada inherited a side that had already begun to change under Crowley and pushed it further. Italy have become genuinely difficult to beat at home, have taken results off Wales and Scotland, and in 2026 recorded a first ever victory over England, winning 36–33. That result, more than any other, marked the point at which Italy stopped being the fixture everyone expected to win.
