Gregor Townsend is the head coach of Scotland and the longest-serving man in the role in the professional era, with his contract extended in September 2025 to run through to the end of 2027.
Born in Galashiels in April 1973, he was one of the most inventive attacking players of his generation — a fly-half and centre for Gala, Northampton, Brive, Castres, Border Reivers, the Sharks and Montpellier, capped 82 times by Scotland, part of the 1999 Five Nations winning side and a Lions Test player in South Africa in 1997.
Glasgow and the national job
He began coaching at Border Reivers, joined the Scotland setup as attack coach in 2008, then took over at Glasgow Warriors in 2012. Three years later he delivered the club’s first major trophy, the 2014–15 Pro12, still the defining line on his CV. He became Scotland head coach in 2017 and was British & Irish Lions attack coach on the 2021 tour of South Africa.
Style, and the criticism
Townsend’s Scotland attack wide and early, offload aggressively and rehearse elaborate strike moves off first phase. At their best — and the run of Calcutta Cup wins over England from 2018 onward is the evidence — they beat anyone. The persistent charge against him is inconsistency: a squad containing genuinely world-class backs has never converted that quality into a Six Nations title, and Scotland finished third in 2026.
That tension, between a team capable of beating the best on their day and one that has not won a Championship, is the story of his tenure.
