About Jean-Noël Spitzer

Jean-Noël Spitzer is the sporting manager of RC Vannes and has been in charge of the club since 2005 — twenty-one years, one of the longest tenures anywhere in French professional rugby.

Born in the Morbihan in March 1974, he was a flanker and a one-club man at Vannes, which he joined aged nine. He played at amateur and semi-professional level only, retiring in 2005 at 31 to move straight into coaching.

Four promotions

He took Vannes up from Fédérale 2 in his first season, to Pro D2 in 2016, and won the Pro D2 title in 2024 to reach the Top 14 for the first time in the club’s history. After relegation in 2025 he immediately won Pro D2 again in 2026, beating Provence 18–14 in the final, taking Vannes straight back up.

Style

A continuity and identity builder rather than a systems import, working with an unusually stable staff — he now sits above a four-man coaching team including Jeremy Davidson and Goulven Le Garrec. Gerard Fraser, now at Bayonne, and Mathieu Cidre, now at Perpignan, both came through under him.
