About Joan Caudullo
Joan Caudullo is the head coach of Montpellier, appointed in June 2024 and extended to 2029. He works under Bernard Laporte, the club’s director of rugby.
Born in January 1982, he was a hooker who came through RC Jacou and Montpellier, making 113 appearances for MHR before five seasons at Mont-de-Marsan. He was never capped by France.
A rookie appointment that worked
He joined the Montpellier staff in 2017 with the reserves, ran the club’s academy from 2020 to 2024 and had a season as first-team forwards coach. He was promoted to head coach after Patrice Collazo, Vincent Etcheto and Christian Labit all left following the club’s narrow escape from relegation — a genuinely inexperienced appointment at that level.
Two seasons, two finals
He turned a survival-mode squad into a trophy winner. Montpellier beat Ulster 59–26 in Bilbao in May 2026 to win the EPCR Challenge Cup, their third, and reached the Top 14 final the following month, losing to Toulouse.
