About Johann van Graan
Johann van Graan is Head of Rugby at Bath, in post since July 2022 and contracted to 2030 after an extension signed in May 2024. He has total responsibility for rugby matters at the club.
Born in March 1980, he never played professionally. He grew up around Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, where his father Barend was Northern Transvaal’s long-serving chief executive, did analysis work from his mid-teens and was employed by the Blue Bulls as a technical adviser at 23.
South Africa and Munster
He worked across the Blue Bulls’ Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and Super 14 sides, joined South Africa in 2012 as technical adviser under Heyneke Meyer and became Springbok forwards coach through to 2016. He was head coach of Munster from October 2017 to 2022, reaching multiple Pro14 and European semi-finals without landing a trophy — a record that followed him to England.
The Bath treble
He inherited a club that had finished bottom of the Premiership. In 2024–25 Bath won the Premiership, the Challenge Cup and the Premiership Rugby Cup — a treble unmatched in the club’s history. They did not retain the league title in 2026, with Northampton taking it.
