About Mark Jones

Mark Jones is the head coach of the Ospreys, taking charge in December 2024 after Toby Booth’s early departure, having already been named as his successor.

Born in Builth Wells in November 1979, he was a wing who made 85 appearances for Llanelli and 77 for the Scarlets region, and won 47 Wales caps between 2001 and 2009, scoring 13 tries.

A coaching career built on defence

Jones was Scarlets skills coach from 2010 to 2015 and interim Wales attack coach during the 2013 Six Nations title campaign. He was head coach at Rotherham Titans and then RGC 1404, winning the WRU National Cup in 2017, and worked as Namibia backs coach in 2019. He moved to New Zealand in 2020 as Crusaders defence coach and Canterbury attack coach, winning Super Rugby Aotearoa, then returned to Worcester Warriors as defence coach until the club’s collapse in 2023. He was interim Wales Under-20 head coach in 2023 before joining the Ospreys as defence coach that July.

The job

He inherits the hardest brief in the league. The WRU confirmed in August 2026 that one Welsh region will be cut by 2028, and every result at Ospreys is now read against that backdrop.

Style

A defence and skills specialist — the Crusaders and Ospreys both hired him specifically for that — with a player-development-first approach.
