About Ronan O’Gara

Ronan O’Gara is manager of the professional group at Stade Rochelais, in charge since 2021 and contracted to 2027.

Born in San Diego in March 1977 and raised in Cork, he was one of the finest fly-halves of his era — 240 appearances and a record points tally for Munster, 128 caps for Ireland, and three British & Irish Lions tours.

Coaching

He was defence coach at Racing 92 from 2013, then an assistant at the Crusaders in 2018 and 2019, winning two Super Rugby titles. He joined La Rochelle as head coach under Jono Gibbes in 2019 and was promoted to manager in 2021.

The Champions Cups

He delivered back-to-back European titles in 2022 and 2023, the first major honours in the club’s history, built on a heavy, forward-dominant, high-collision game with enormous bench impact. Recent seasons have been leaner — 2025–26 finished without silverware and with public scrutiny of his future — and he is now rebuilding the squad.

Style

Combative and emotionally invested, on the touchline and in press conferences alike. He served a five-week ban for his conduct towards a referee, which tells you something about both the intensity and the cost of it.
