Simon Mannix is the head coach of Portugal, appointed in April 2024 and the man charged with turning the most entertaining side at the 2023 World Cup into a consistently competitive one.
Born in Lower Hutt in August 1971, he made eight appearances for the All Blacks including one full Test, against France in 1994, and played for Wellington, the Hurricanes, Sale Sharks, Gloucester and Racing 92.
Coaching in Europe
Mannix spent five years as backs coach at Racing Metro, then joined Munster in the same role. He became head coach at Pau in 2014 and won Pro D2 in his first season, taking the club into the Top 14. He later coached Singapore before taking the Portugal job.

He inherited a side that had captured neutral affection at the 2023 World Cup with a fearless, off-the-cuff attacking game and a first ever tournament win, over Fiji. His task has been to add Test-level structure without coaching the joy out of them, and he has delivered qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
