Steve Tandy is the head coach of Wales, appointed in July 2025 as successor to Warren Gatland and confirmed as the standout candidate by the WRU. He took charge from the start of the 2025–26 season.
Born in Tonmawr in January 1980, he was an openside flanker for Neath and then the Ospreys, making 102 regional appearances. He was never capped by Wales, which he has described as his one regret as a player.
From Ospreys to Edinburgh and back
He moved into coaching young, becoming Ospreys head coach in 2012 at 32 and winning the Pro12 in his first season. He left in 2018, spent a season with the Waratahs, then became Scotland’s defence coach under Gregor Townsend in 2019 — the role that rebuilt his reputation. Scotland’s defensive numbers improved sharply under him, and he was defence coach for the British & Irish Lions on the 2021 tour of South Africa.
The job
He inherits a Wales side at its lowest ebb in the professional era, coming off a record run of Test defeats and a bottom-place Six Nations finish. His brief is a rebuild rather than a quick fix, and his defensive specialism is expected to be the first thing to change. His first Six Nations in charge was in 2026.
