About Stuart Lancaster

Stuart Lancaster is the head coach of Connacht, the former England boss who rebuilt his reputation as the architect of Leinster’s attack.

Stuart Lancaster is the head coach of Connacht, appointed in June 2025 on a two-year deal. His career is one of the more complete redemption arcs in the modern game.

Born in Penrith in October 1969, he was a back-row forward for Wakefield, Headingley and Leeds Tykes, converted from hooker at 15, and never played international rugby.

England, and after

He ran the Leeds academy, coached Leeds Carnegie to National Division One in 2007, then became RFU elite rugby director and England head coach from 2012 to 2015. He left after the host nation’s pool-stage exit at the 2015 World Cup, one of the most public setbacks any English coach has suffered.

He rebuilt at Leinster as senior coach from 2016 to 2022, where he is widely credited as the architect of the attacking system that carried the province to the 2018 Champions Cup and four consecutive league titles, and which underpinned Ireland’s subsequent rise. A difficult spell at Racing 92 from 2023 to 2025 ended without silverware.

Connacht

He arrived in Galway for pre-season in July 2025. The brief is to bring elite structure to a province that has always run on identity and limited resources.

Style

Lancaster is an attack-structure and culture coach — layered attacking shapes, obsessive detail, and heavy investment in player leadership.

As a player Back-row flanker for Wakefield, Headingley and Leeds Tykes. Never capped, and moved into academy management and coaching in his early thirties.
