About Wilco Louw
Wilco Louw is a specialist, and in the modern front row that is becoming rare enough to be valuable.
He is a tighthead in the traditional sense: heavy, low, and difficult to move, with a scrummaging technique built for the seventy-eighth minute rather than the highlight package. Sides that plan to attack South Africa’s set piece generally revise the plan.
His career has taken the long route — the Stormers, then Harlequins, then back to South Africa with the Bulls — and the English seasons visibly improved the parts of his game that were not the scrum.
He is not going to make forty metres in open field and does not need to. What he offers is the platform on which the rest of the Springboks game plan is negotiable.
In a squad with genuine depth at tighthead, he keeps being selected. That is the most reliable review a prop can get.
