Bryn Hall Wants The Barrett Brothers At One More World Cup

Beauden Barrett is 35 and scored twice in Sydney. Bryn Hall says he has to go to the 2027 World Cup, the Barrett brothers' last chance to play together.

“He’s got to go to the World Cup. He’s got to go.” Bryn Hall on Beauden Barrett, 35.

Bryn Hall has no doubt about Beauden Barrett and 2027.

“He’s got to go to the World Cup. He’s got to go,” Hall said on the Aotearoa Rugby Pod on Sunday 18 October.

Barrett is 35. He scored twice in the 43-21 win in Sydney, the second an intercept he ran 70 metres. Hall, the former Crusaders and Blues halfback, thinks the Barrett brothers have one World Cup left together.

Comments are open: should Beauden Barrett go to a fourth World Cup at 36, yes or no?

Beauden Barrett spent this year behind Ruben Love

Hall’s case starts with the months Barrett was not picked.

He said Barrett helped Ruben Love prepare when Love had the jersey. Then Richie Mo’unga was injured, Damian McKenzie moved to 10, and Barrett was back at fullback. This site explained why Beauden Barrett started at fullback.

“He could have dropped his lip, man… He could have, but he didn’t do that.”

Hall said Barrett led in other ways while he waited. Now he gets to play.

Bryn Hall saw the speed still there at 35

The intercept was the moment Hall kept coming back to.

“He’s still quick like when he got that intercept, how old is he 35, 35, like to be able to like still have the gas to be able to score that try, um he still got it man.”

Then he said Barrett has to go to the World Cup.

James Parsons, the former All Blacks hooker, sounded like a man who had argued it before. “Well, I’d hate to say I’m right,” he said, and laughed.

Jordie Barrett’s exit put Beauden in charge

Jordie Barrett was ruled out with a calf injury before kick-off in Sydney. Timoci Tavatavanawai was called in at 12.

Parsons said that changed who would act as the second playmaker. That is why Beauden shone, in his view. He and McKenzie ran the game.

Parsons thinks the harder part was the year before it.

“I actually think the maturity he showed to play that role in South Africa, it wouldn’t have been easy, man.”

“He’s still got that hunger. He’s got that competitive spirit and he just goes, ‘Hey mate, don’t forget me. I’m I’m I’m good to go.'”

The Barrett brothers’ last World Cup together

Of the three, Hall said he has spent most time with Scott Barrett.

Scott came back from back surgery in May, and the captaincy went to Ardie Savea while he was out. Jordie is playing, in Hall’s words, at a world-class level.

“For Scott and probably for Bod, this is probably going to be the last World Cup to have a chance to play the World Cup. Jordy might have another another lick in it, but I think as I guess as brothers, you’d love to be together at that World Cup one more time.”

He called it a massive fire in all three of them.

Experience wins World Cups, says Parsons

Host Ross Karl added a number from a television segment that week. Beauden Barrett, he said, has now spent more days in All Blacks camp than anyone, Colin Meads included.

Karl compared it with the way the Springboks used the veteran hooker Schalk Brits at the 2019 World Cup.

Parsons went back to 2011. Keven Mealamu was part of that leadership group, and Stephen Donald came off the bench in the final to kick the winning penalty.

“Pressure is awful if you’re not experienced it before.”

Hall wants Beauden on the plane for exactly that.
