About Gerard Fraser
Gerard Fraser is the head coach of Aviron Bayonnais, promoted in February 2026 when Grégory Patat left by mutual agreement after three and a half seasons. 2026–27 is his first full campaign in charge.
Born in Rangiora in November 1978, he was a fly-half who came through the Crusaders system before a long spell at Calvisano in Italy, winning two Super 10 titles and the Coppa Italia. He later played for Bayonne, L’Aquila and Bordeaux Bègles. He was never an All Black.
Coaching
He started in France as an assistant to Jean-Noël Spitzer at Vannes from 2018 to 2021, working with the backs. He returned to Bayonne — his old playing club — in 2022 as three-quarters coach and was given the broader title of head of rugby in November 2023.
